Is there a better way to christen a newly-named arena than with one of the biggest games of the year?

LA’s Arena will be the site of a star-studded meeting between the Lakers and Nets, one of the marquee matchups of the NBA’s five-game Christmas Day slate. The showdown wraps up a three-game homestand for the Lakers, while the Nets are two games into a three-game Western Conference road trip.

Brooklyn enters the meeting having earned the reputation of a legitimate title contender while LA is a team that’s still figuring things out. Making matters worse for the Lakers is a knee injury sustained by Anthony Davis on Dec. 17.

After an MRI revealed a sprained MCL in Davis’ knee, it was announced that he would be out for a minimum of four weeks.

The Nets, on the other hand, are coming off of a week in which a COVID outbreak resulted in games against the Nuggets and Wizards being postponed. Including superstars Kevin Durant, James Harden and Kyrie Irving, 10 Nets were placed into the NBA’s health and safety protocols, prompting the team to sign three players using the NBA’s hardship exemption.

Can the Lakers earn a much-needed win over a Nets team recovering from the week that was?
