There is no denying that this season has not gone how the Bills expected. They came into 2021 as Super Bowl pick darlings after an incredible 2020, but they now find themselves at 8-5 – a game out of the AFC East lead. The good news for them is that they go into Week 16 with a great opportunity to get the division lead with a very attainable tiebreaker. The bad news is that they have to do it against Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

The Patriots are coming off of a tough loss against the Colts, but last time they faced the Bills it was in a gale that ended in a 14-10 win. Mac Jones threw just three passes in that game, and it seems unlikely that will cut it on Sunday. In better conditions Josh Allen should be able to do more for the Bills, who are coming off of a 31-14 win against Sean McDermott’s old team the Panthers.

This game is huge for the Bills. The Wild Card winner of the AFC North is breathing down their necks, and they’re one of five teams in the AFC to have an 8-6 record. The last three games of the season will see some of these teams cannibalizing themselves, making this a golden opportunity for the Bills to pull away from the pack.

For all of the talk about Allen and Jones, however, this game could be decided on the ground. The Patriots dominated the Bills in the trenches two weeks ago, and the Bills never figured out an answer. Devin Singletary had 86 yards for Buffalo in last week’s win over the Panthers, and the Bills may ask for a similar performance out of him this week. The Patriots are uncharacteristically middling against the run this season while being third against the passing game. The Bills may look to exploit that coming off of a strong week running the ball.
