Monday night’s clash between the Lakers and the Jazz is the first meeting for the two this season.

The Lakers entered this season with high hopes given the amount of talent they assembled on their roster in the off-season, but chemistry issues, coupled with injury and Covid related absences have made this campaign a turbulent one, at best.

They currently sit at 21-22, good for third in the Pacific Division, but will need to find some consistency – and health – if they are to make the playoffs this season. They had their season-high four-game winning streak halted by the Grizzlies on Jan. 10.

Utah had been fortunate in avoiding any prolonged absence related to COVID-19, but when it hit them, it hit hard with Rudy Gobert, Rudy Gay, and Joe Ingles all entering the league’s Health and Safety Protocols.

Given their lack of personnel the Jazz have struggled to recapture the form they had prior to the new year, and are just 5-5 in the last ten games. They’ve lost the foothold they had on the third seed in the Western Conference to the surging Memphis Grizzlies.

The question is will the Jazz be able to revitalize their season against the Lakers?

For the Jazz, this contest comes on the second night of a back-to-back following Sunday’s game in the Mile High City against the Nuggets.

Rudy Gobert and Rudy Gay have both cleared protocols and played Sunday against the Nuggets, while for the Lakers, Carmelo Anthony remains out, but the team has said that Anthony Davis will be re-evaluated next week as he looks to come back from his knee injury.

The Jazz and the Lakers play two more times in the regular season, on Feb. 16 in Los Angeles, and Mar. 31 in Utah.
